Sun Spirit Yoga
Making the Most of Your Holidays
December, 2017

The holidays are supposed to be “the most wonderful time of the year”, and while I love all of the extra family time, the decorating, the parties, and the traditions, I know that in order to maintain a sense of peace and groundedness through the season, it is important for me to remain connected to myself so that I’m able to turn my energy outward in a positive way.

Here are three things I’ve tried that have gotten me on track and on the right path towards a stress-free holiday:

Spend a little time each day in your yoga practice and know your “go to” asanas. Some of my favorites are:

Downward facing dog
Tadasana (Mountain Pose)
Arm/Shoulder circles
Warrior II and Reverse Warrior
Warrior III

Half Moon

Child’s pose or knees to chest
Supine Twist

Spend a little time outside every day. I like to go for a run a few times a week. If I need to get away from the “noise” of the day, I’ll run in silence. If I’m looking for a pick-me-up or want to learn something new, I’ll listen to a podcast. I always feel good doing this – it gets the blood going, gets the sun and air on my face, and makes me feel alive. Run, walk, dance, skip. Whatever it is, get outside and do it!

Read something inspiring every day. Whether it’s 15 minutes or an hour, read something that gets you out of your daily mindset and gives your spirit a little something to ruminate on. It could be the Bible, a book by a motivational author, or a light-hearted fictional piece. Let your heart and mind commune in soulful words and see how it changes your perspective on the day.

Very simple. Very easy. Add these few things to your holiday schedule and take notice of your energy level, your inner light, and your outer expression. It’ll be the most wonderful time of the year, and something that you can bring into each day of the New Year! Happiest of holidays to you!
